Exiles #20 Princess Python

For someone who doesn’t like snakes, I’m hitting the Serpent Society a lot.  I do find them fascinating, though.  And they’re a lot of low to mid-level characters with a lot of potential.

Here’s another.  I never realized she was Southern until I did the research for this.  I partnered my Princess Python with my altered Griffin.  I didn’t know that her abilities weren’t a power, either so I went ahead and made it one.

I have to say, my favorite version…other than mine, is the one from the Marvel cartoons who doesn’t have a giant snake as a pet but rides a giant robot snake…like a Harley.  Pretty awesome. And not a bad idea for something in my Savage Spelljammer game…maybe a society that has domesticated giant snakes and ride them into battle…

Body Armor: Princess Python’s scaly skin provides her with Typical protection from physical attacks.

Snake Charming: Princess Python has a natural talent for training snakes. She has Good control over the creatures and can give the animals either verbal or non-verbal cues. She instills such a feeling of loyalty in her snakes that they will attempt to protect her even if she is unconscious.

Talents: Princess Python is a talented dancer and has the Performer skill.

Contacts: The Princess is a senior member of the Circus of Crime. She was expelled from the Serpent Society for treachery and is no longer looked upon with favor by that group.

Background: A founding member of the Circus of Crime, Princess Python eventually convinced the group to turn on Ringmaster. They appointed the Clown the leader and changed their name to the Masters of Menace. A confrontation with Spider-Man ended in defeat and they were sent to prison. Later, they decided to return to the Ringmaster’s leadership and participated in several missions together, battling such heroes as the Avengers, Thor and Iron Man. During their battle with Iron Man, her pet snake was thrown into a vat of chemicals and killed. Princess Python was so distraught over the creature’s death she jumped in after it. She likely would have died as well, but Iron Man saved her.

Nonetheless, she was made quite ill by the chemicals and was hospitalized for several months. When she finally recovered, she was changed, her skin and eyes becoming reptilian and her affinity for snakes strengthening into the ability to communicate with them, though in a rudimentary way.

She was invited to join the Serpent Squad under the Viper’s leadership and found a new snake to serve as her partner. Eventually, she returned to the Circus of Crime and battled other heroes including Luke Cage, Howard the Duck and the Hulk. Later, she joined the Serpent Society and helped in their hunt for MODOK, though she was not in the group that found him. She remained with the Serpent Society through its leadership changes, welcoming back Viper when she took over. She remained with the group when Sidewinder left and King Cobra assumed leadership. But, when Cobra demanded Diamondback betray Captain America, she joined with Black Mamba, Asp and Sidewinder to rescue her.

King Cobra did not appreciate what he considered a betrayal and sent the other members of the Serpent Society to hunt down and punish them. Princess Python fled with the rest back to the Circus of Crime and they, with the Circus’ and Captain America’s help were able to defeat the assassins sent after them.

Later, as the Circus was traveling through the Adirondack mountains, they discovered the Chimera, his intellect little more than that of an animal, wandering aimlessly. He had enough snake DNA by this time for Princess Python to communicate with him almost as well as she did ordinary snakes. She, and the Circus of Crime took him in, using him as an attraction to their sideshow most of the time.

However, their criminal ways were not behind them and, during a caper in Oregon, they were confronted by the West Coast Avengers. Princess Python set the Chimera on Wonder Man and he was able to go toe to toe with the ionically powered Avenger. A piece of stray debris thrown up by their conflict struck Princess Python, though and she was knocked unconscious. Worried only about her, the Chimera broke off combat with Wonder Man and abandoned the Circus to their fate to flee with her.

Without them around to aid them, the rest of the members of the Circus of Crime were easily captured and, though Princess Python’s injury was slight and she quickly recovered, her companions were already in custody before she could take the Chimera back to aid them.

Left to her own devices, she used the Chimera to engage in a few minor crimes, clashing with Luke Cage again as well as She-Hulk and War Machine. Though they were never particularly successful, they managed to retain their freedom and garner the notice of the leaders of Roxxon. The Roxxon company offered her a position and, after proving herself in a mission against a transport going to Project: Pegasus, she was inducted into the Nth Command.

Princess Python and the Chimera traveled through several dimensions and performed a number of missions but she grew ever more uncomfortable with what the group was doing. The Nth Command eventually clashed with the Exiles and Princess Python’s doubts came to the fore. She and the Chimera changed sides in the middle of the battle and the Nth Command’s activities were stymied. Princess Python and the Chimera joined the Exiles as they departed and she now works to make amends for her past actions.

Exiles #19 – The Chimera

This guy got a mention in Agents of Shield and hasn’t been seen otherwise since the 90’s, as far as I know.  That makes him the perfect candidate for a reboot renaissance.  And what better place for a reboot than the Exiles?

I changed him a bit, of course, making him reminiscent of a mythical creature I like better than Griffins.

Claws: The Chimera’s primary attack is with his claws and teeth, which do Monstrous Edged damage. They are made of Amazing Material Strength.

Tail: The Chimera’s tail can strike any character up to one area away. It does Amazing Edged damage and the target must make an Endurance check against Amazing intensity or be paralyzed for 1-10 rounds.

Horns: If the Chimera moves at least 4 areas in a straight line while charging, his horns provide him a +1 CS to hit and damage.

Body Armor: The Chimera’s body is covered in dense scales of Amazing material strength. They act as Amazing Body armor against all physical and energy-beam attacks and Incredible Resistance against Heat, Cold and Radiation.

Lightning Speed: The Chimera’s powerful legs allow him to run at Excellent land speed (5 areas per round).

Snake Control: The Chimera has Incredible control over snakes within 10 areas. Normal snakes (and perhaps some bird-descended characters) will do his bidding. The Chimera has found little use for this power since reverting to an animal intelligence other than keeping a large number of snakes around him at most times.

 Talents: None

Contacts: Princess Python is the only person who will consistently aid the Chimera.

Background: Johnny Horton was a small time criminal who was captured by agents of the second subversive organization to be known as the Secret Empire. The Secret Empire assigned a surgeon in its employ to transform Horton into a superhuman being by using various techniques, including grafting a tail and claws onto Horton’s body permanently and administering an experimental mutagenic serum on him. Horton was named the Chimera after his new appearance, which vaguely resembled the mythical chimera, a creature that was part lion, part goat and part serpent and, because the term also applied to a creature made up of the DNA from several sources.

At first, Horton retained his normal intelligence and sanity in his new form. He loathed his new appearance, believing he was now a freak, but nevertheless obeyed the Secret Empire’s orders to attack the mutant known as the Beast. The Beast and his colleague, the Angel, defeated the Chimera, who was sent to prison. While in prison, the mutagenic serum he had taken caused him to go insane and further transformed his body, changing his legs into a goat-like form and vastly increasing his strength. The Chimera broke free from prison and hunted down the surgeon who had transformed him. When the surgeon was unable to tell him the location of his former masters in the Secret Empire (which had by this time been defeated), the Chimera hurled him from a great height in a rage. The costumed crimefighter, Spider-Man, caught the surgeon, but the two men struck an oil tanker when Spider-Man’s webbing broke and they both plunged into water. The Beast, who had learned of the Chimera’s escape, helped Spider-Man and the surgeon to safety. Although Spider-Man took the brunt of the impact against the tanker, the surgeon died. Together Spider-Man and the Beast defeated the Chimera, who was taken into police custody.

Months later, the Chimera broke into Avengers Mansion, seeking to challenge the Avengers. The Chimera realized that the serum he’d been injected with continued to mutate him whenever he pushed his superhuman abilities to the limit; hence, he intended to battle as many superhumans as possible to increase his own powers. During his subsequent battle with Spider-Man and the Avenger, Wonder Man, the Chimera’s strength further increased, and he gained the facial features of a lion. But finally, while lifting a flaming Avengers Quinjet in order to hurl it at his two foes, a further mutation caused the Chimera to lose his human intellect. Reduced to the mental level of an animal, the Chimera was seized with terror at the flames and dropped the Quinjet, seemingly crushed beneath its weight. However, the Chimera survived the impact and used his claws to dig his way to safety underground.

Several months after that, the Circus of Crime found the Chimera wandering through the Adirondack Mountains. He had mutated further and had grown even stronger than before and developed a touch, scaled hide. Princess Python discovered that he was now snake like enough that she could impose her mental control over him.

He served as an attraction in the Circus’s sideshow, having become too bestial to realize he was being treated like the freak he’d feared he looked like since his first transformation.  He was put into more violent service when they clashed with the West Coast Avengers. He proved a match even for the Ionic power of Wonder Man but, in the course of the battle, Princess Python was injured. Driven by his animal instincts, he fled with the wounded woman, leaving the rest of the Circus to be defeated and imprisoned.

Princess Python’s wounds proved superficial and she was soon approached by Roxxon Oil. She and the Chimera were recruited into the Nth Commandos and served he served as the muscle for several of their operations. Princess Python grew more and more dissatisfied with the actions the Nth Command were taking as time went on and, when the Nth Commandos came face to face with the Exiles on one of their missions, she and Chimera quickly changed sides to join them.
