Exiles #19 – The Chimera

This guy got a mention in Agents of Shield and hasn’t been seen otherwise since the 90’s, as far as I know.  That makes him the perfect candidate for a reboot renaissance.  And what better place for a reboot than the Exiles?

I changed him a bit, of course, making him reminiscent of a mythical creature I like better than Griffins.

Claws: The Chimera’s primary attack is with his claws and teeth, which do Monstrous Edged damage. They are made of Amazing Material Strength.

Tail: The Chimera’s tail can strike any character up to one area away. It does Amazing Edged damage and the target must make an Endurance check against Amazing intensity or be paralyzed for 1-10 rounds.

Horns: If the Chimera moves at least 4 areas in a straight line while charging, his horns provide him a +1 CS to hit and damage.

Body Armor: The Chimera’s body is covered in dense scales of Amazing material strength. They act as Amazing Body armor against all physical and energy-beam attacks and Incredible Resistance against Heat, Cold and Radiation.

Lightning Speed: The Chimera’s powerful legs allow him to run at Excellent land speed (5 areas per round).

Snake Control: The Chimera has Incredible control over snakes within 10 areas. Normal snakes (and perhaps some bird-descended characters) will do his bidding. The Chimera has found little use for this power since reverting to an animal intelligence other than keeping a large number of snakes around him at most times.

 Talents: None

Contacts: Princess Python is the only person who will consistently aid the Chimera.

Background: Johnny Horton was a small time criminal who was captured by agents of the second subversive organization to be known as the Secret Empire. The Secret Empire assigned a surgeon in its employ to transform Horton into a superhuman being by using various techniques, including grafting a tail and claws onto Horton’s body permanently and administering an experimental mutagenic serum on him. Horton was named the Chimera after his new appearance, which vaguely resembled the mythical chimera, a creature that was part lion, part goat and part serpent and, because the term also applied to a creature made up of the DNA from several sources.

At first, Horton retained his normal intelligence and sanity in his new form. He loathed his new appearance, believing he was now a freak, but nevertheless obeyed the Secret Empire’s orders to attack the mutant known as the Beast. The Beast and his colleague, the Angel, defeated the Chimera, who was sent to prison. While in prison, the mutagenic serum he had taken caused him to go insane and further transformed his body, changing his legs into a goat-like form and vastly increasing his strength. The Chimera broke free from prison and hunted down the surgeon who had transformed him. When the surgeon was unable to tell him the location of his former masters in the Secret Empire (which had by this time been defeated), the Chimera hurled him from a great height in a rage. The costumed crimefighter, Spider-Man, caught the surgeon, but the two men struck an oil tanker when Spider-Man’s webbing broke and they both plunged into water. The Beast, who had learned of the Chimera’s escape, helped Spider-Man and the surgeon to safety. Although Spider-Man took the brunt of the impact against the tanker, the surgeon died. Together Spider-Man and the Beast defeated the Chimera, who was taken into police custody.

Months later, the Chimera broke into Avengers Mansion, seeking to challenge the Avengers. The Chimera realized that the serum he’d been injected with continued to mutate him whenever he pushed his superhuman abilities to the limit; hence, he intended to battle as many superhumans as possible to increase his own powers. During his subsequent battle with Spider-Man and the Avenger, Wonder Man, the Chimera’s strength further increased, and he gained the facial features of a lion. But finally, while lifting a flaming Avengers Quinjet in order to hurl it at his two foes, a further mutation caused the Chimera to lose his human intellect. Reduced to the mental level of an animal, the Chimera was seized with terror at the flames and dropped the Quinjet, seemingly crushed beneath its weight. However, the Chimera survived the impact and used his claws to dig his way to safety underground.

Several months after that, the Circus of Crime found the Chimera wandering through the Adirondack Mountains. He had mutated further and had grown even stronger than before and developed a touch, scaled hide. Princess Python discovered that he was now snake like enough that she could impose her mental control over him.

He served as an attraction in the Circus’s sideshow, having become too bestial to realize he was being treated like the freak he’d feared he looked like since his first transformation.  He was put into more violent service when they clashed with the West Coast Avengers. He proved a match even for the Ionic power of Wonder Man but, in the course of the battle, Princess Python was injured. Driven by his animal instincts, he fled with the wounded woman, leaving the rest of the Circus to be defeated and imprisoned.

Princess Python’s wounds proved superficial and she was soon approached by Roxxon Oil. She and the Chimera were recruited into the Nth Commandos and served he served as the muscle for several of their operations. Princess Python grew more and more dissatisfied with the actions the Nth Command were taking as time went on and, when the Nth Commandos came face to face with the Exiles on one of their missions, she and Chimera quickly changed sides to join them.
